Mississippi Casino Revenue Streak over $200 Million

Mississippi casinos continue their impressive revenue streak, surpassing $200 million for the fourth month in a row. Data from the Mississippi Gaming Commission reveals that total casino revenue for August reached $209.6 million, nearly hitting $210 million and marking a 2% increase compared to July.
Strong Growth Across Regions
August saw significant regional growth, particularly in the state’s Central region. Central casinos posted a 10.6% increase in revenue from July, outperforming both Northern and Coastal regions. Northern casinos saw a solid 8.4% month-on-month growth, while Coastal casinos, traditionally the top earners, experienced a slight dip of 1.7%. Despite this, Coastal casinos still contributed the largest share of total revenue, clearing $134 million in August.
Overall, Mississippi casino revenue grew 5% year-on-year, climbing from $198.7 million in August 2023 to $208.7 million in August 2024.
Mississippi’s Missed iGaming Opportunity
While land-based casinos thrive, the absence of legalized online gaming (iGaming) leaves the state missing out on potential revenue. According to PlayUSA estimates, if Mississippi allowed iGaming, the state could have seen an additional $48.9 million in online casino revenue in July 2024 alone. States like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New Jersey have reported substantial returns from online gaming, and Mississippi could have followed suit.
Based on a population-to-revenue comparison with other iGaming states, Mississippi’s estimated $48.9 million in July could have generated nearly $3.9 million in tax revenue. However, without iGaming legalization, Mississippi’s General Fund misses out on this significant revenue source.
Mississippi is one of 43 U.S. states that has yet to legalize online casinos, while only seven states currently allow both land-based and online gambling. These seven states have shown the benefits of diversifying gaming platforms, capturing significant online casino revenue. In contrast, Mississippi remains focused on its thriving land-based operations.
In 2023, states with iGaming, such as Pennsylvania and Michigan, saw per-capita online casino revenue significantly outpacing Mississippi’s potential. For instance, Pennsylvania reported $215.4 million in online casino revenue in July, with a population of 13 million. Mississippi, with 2.9 million residents, could see similar per-capita results if online casinos were legalized
