DraftKings Dominates State Market
Massachusetts sports betting revenue slipped to its weakest monthly level of 2025 in July, even as the market expanded compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Taxable revenue totaled $48 million for the month, up 16.5% year-on-year, but down 22.7% from June’s $62.1 million — the previous monthly low of the year. Nearly all of July’s revenue stemmed from online wagering, which generated $47.6 million, while retail betting contributed just $567,407.
The July handle — the total amount wagered — stood at $489.5 million, an 18.9% increase over July 2024. Of this, $483.2 million came from online bets and $6.3 million from retail, resulting in a hold of 9.81%.
Sports betting revenue in Massachusetts fell to $48 million in July 2025, the lowest monthly figure this year, despite a 16.5% increase from July 2024.
DraftKings maintained a dominant market share, generating over half of all online betting revenue, while FanDuel and BetMGM trailed behind.
Casino revenue remained steady at $99.5 million, providing a reliable tax stream as sports betting showed seasonal volatility.
DraftKings Maintains Dominance
FanDuel followed with $12.3 million from a $121.6 million handle (10.12% hold), while BetMGM and Fanatics closely trailed with $4.4 million each, though on different volumes of wagers. BetMGM posted an 11.05% hold on $38 million, compared with Fanatics’ 7.96% on $55.3 million.
Other operators reported significantly lower figures. ESPN Bet fell just shy of the $1 million threshold, generating $980,740 in revenue. Caesars brought in $765,128, while Bally Bet closed the table with $314,682.
Retail betting remained a small segment of the market but showed notable variance across the state’s casinos. Plainridge Park Casino led with $245,762 in revenue from a $2 million handle, reflecting a strong 12.58% hold. Encore Boston Harbor followed with $221,823 on $3.5 million in bets (6.33% hold), while MGM Springfield reported $857,275 in revenue with an 11.64% hold.
Beyond sports betting, Massachusetts’ traditional casino sector remained steady in July. Statewide casino revenue reached $99.5 million, flat compared to last year but 1.8% higher than June 2025. Slots accounted for $72.2 million, while table games generated $27.3 million. Encore Boston Harbor dominated with $60.2 million, ahead of MGM Springfield’s $24 million and Plainridge Park’s $15.3 million. Overall, Massachusetts collected $38.1 million in gambling-related taxes during July. Sports betting contributed $9.6 million, while casinos provided $28.5 million.
July underscored both the volatility of Massachusetts’ sports betting market and the stability of its casino sector, with DraftKings continuing to dominate online wagering while overall revenue hit its lowest point of 2025.
Market Outlook
While year-on-year comparisons remain positive, the month-to-month downturn highlights the seasonal volatility of sports wagering, with July often marked by a lighter sports calendar. DraftKings’ commanding lead in its home state continues to shape market dynamics, leaving rivals to compete for smaller slices of the pie.
The stability of casino revenue suggests a more predictable stream of tax income for the state, even as the sports betting market adjusts to seasonal fluctuations.
