How Will Ohio end This iGaming year?

After months of stagnation and declining revenue, Ohio's land-based casinos are experiencing a much-anticipated resurgence. In August 2024, the state’s four casinos combined to generate a total of $85.7 million, marking a notable 4.6% increase from the previous month’s figures. This resurgence is particularly significant, as it represents the first time in five months that total win has surpassed the $85 million mark, suggesting a potential recovery for an industry that has faced considerable challenges. The uptick in revenue comes as Ohio's casinos grappled with a summer slump, prompting operators and stakeholders to explore new avenues for growth.

Struggles and Recovery

Ohio’s casinos faced significant challenges earlier this year, with revenues struggling to break past the $85 million threshold for four consecutive months. The figures released by the Ohio Casino Control Commission indicate a turning point for the industry, as all four casinos reported positive growth in August.

The revenue breakdown is as follows:

Casino July Revenue June Revenue % Change
Jack Cleveland $22,763,277 $19,704,955 7.37%
Hollywood Columbus $23,467,266 $23,411,020 5.57%
Hard Rock Cincinnati $20,256,969 $20,227,940 3.00%
Hollywood Toledo $19,205,155 $18,245,984 1.81%
Total $85,692,667 $81,589,899 4.55%

Jack Cleveland Casino led the charge with a 7.4% increase, followed closely by Hollywood Columbus and Hard Rock Cincinnati. The collective revenue growth of over $4 million month-on-month illustrates a recovery from the losses that characterized the previous months, particularly from May to June.

Legislative Moves Towards Online Casinos

While the rise in land-based casino revenue is promising, discussions surrounding the legalization of online casinos in Ohio have gained traction. A bill filed by State Senator Niraj Antani aims to legalize online gambling, granting iGaming licenses to the state’s 11 casinos and racinos. Although Antani expressed doubts about the bill's chances of passing, he emphasized its importance in starting a critical conversation about online gambling in Ohio.

From a revenue perspective, the potential for online casinos is substantial. Analysts estimate that iGaming could generate at least double the revenue currently earned by land-based casinos. According to PlayUSA, the legalization of online casinos in Ohio could have produced approximately $207.3 million in revenue, a figure that underscores the financial implications of maintaining the current ban.

A Look at Regional Comparisons

To illustrate the potential of Ohio’s online casino market, it is useful to compare projected revenue with that of neighboring states:

State August Online Casino Revenue Population (2023 Census) Per-Capita Revenue
Pennsylvania $225 million 13 million $17.31
New Jersey $198.4 million 9.3 million $21.33
Michigan $196.7 million 10 million $19.67
Connecticut $44.6 million 3.6 million $12.39
West Virginia $20.4 million 1.8 million $11.33
Delaware $5.8 million 1 million $5.80
Rhode Island $3 million 1.1 million $2.73
Average $99.1 million 5.69 million $17.42
Ohio (Projected) $207.3 million 11.9 million $17.42

“Ohio's casino operators are missing considerable revenue because online casinos are banned.”

The Future

If Ohio were to legalize online casinos, it would likely become the second-largest iGaming market in the country. The potential revenue from iGaming would far exceed the current earnings from land-based properties, pushing total casino revenue in Ohio to nearly $300 million.

The recent uptick in revenue for Ohio’s casinos reflects a positive trend for the industry, signaling a recovery from earlier struggles. This shift could serve as a vital foundation for future growth and investment in the sector. However, the ongoing conversation regarding online gambling may prove crucial for the state’s economic landscape. As legislators continue to explore the possibilities of online casinos, Ohio could be on the cusp of a significant transformation in its gaming industry. Legalizing online casinos could not only enhance state revenue but also provide players with more options, ultimately modernizing Ohio's gambling framework.

The need for regulatory adaptation is becoming increasingly apparent, and stakeholders must engage in constructive dialogue to determine the best path forward for Ohio's gaming future. The success of the state’s casinos may hinge not only on recovering lost revenue but also on embracing the potential of online gaming, which could fundamentally reshape the gaming landscape in the Buckeye State.
