Indiana Keeps Growing

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana's gaming industry has experienced a notable upswing, marking three consecutive months with adjusted gross revenue (AGR) exceeding $200 million. According to the latest data from the Indiana Gaming Commission, the state’s 13 casinos generated $210,974,762 in AGR in May 2024, up by approximately $10.6 million from April. This increase represents a significant 5.3% month-on-month growth, reflecting the sector's strong performance and expansion.

Analysis of May Revenue Trends

May's revenue performance was bolstered by impressive gains across several key casinos. French Lick Resort emerged as the leader, with a striking 17.9% increase in AGR from April to May. This was followed closely by Rising Star Casino, which saw a 15.5% growth. Caesars Southern Indiana and Harrah’s Hoosier Park also posted robust increases of 12.7% and 10.5%, respectively. Collectively, these four casinos contributed an additional $6 million to the overall revenue.

Several factors contributed to these gains. French Lick Resort likely benefited from targeted marketing and promotions that successfully drew in more visitors. Rising Star Casino’s growth might be attributed to a combination of enhanced customer experience and strategic management. Caesars Southern Indiana and Harrah’s Hoosier Park could have capitalized on favorable regional economic conditions and increased discretionary spending by patrons.

However, not all casinos experienced positive growth. Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and Ameristar Casino saw slight declines of 0.4% and 1.3% in AGR, respectively. These declines could be due to increased competition or fluctuations in customer preferences.

Impact of Terre Haute Casino

A key driver behind the recent revenue surge is Indiana's newest gaming establishment, Terre Haute Casino Resort. Opened in early April 2024 by Churchill Downs Inc., the casino has quickly established itself as a strong competitor in the state's gaming market. In its debut month, Terre Haute Casino generated $11.2 million in AGR, which grew to $12.3 million in May. This substantial growth places Terre Haute Casino among the mid-tier revenue earners in Indiana, comparable to established properties like Ameristar and Bally's Evansville. The casino's success can be attributed to its modern facilities, strategic location, and effective marketing strategies that attracted a significant number of patrons.

Despite the robust performance of traditional casinos, Indiana has yet to explore the full potential of online casinos, or iGaming. Currently illegal in the state, iGaming represents a considerable missed revenue opportunity. In the Midwest, Michigan stands out as a leading iGaming state, generating around $200 million in online casino revenue during its peak months. This highlights the potential for Indiana to capture a significant share of the online gaming market.

Analyses suggest that Indiana could generate over $100 million in monthly iGaming revenue based on comparative per-capita averages from other states. For instance, states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey have demonstrated high per-capita revenue from online casinos, indicating that Indiana, with its comparable population size, could achieve similar results. If Indiana were to legalize iGaming, a 15% tax on this revenue could yield at least $15 million in monthly tax income, contributing significantly to state funds.

“Indiana's casinos have surpassed $200 million in monthly revenue for the third consecutive month, bolstered by the new Terre Haute Casino.”

Strategic Considerations for iGaming

Implementing iGaming in Indiana could diversify the state's gaming revenue streams and attract a broader demographic of players who prefer the convenience of online gaming. It would also position Indiana to compete with neighboring states like Michigan, thereby retaining potential revenue that might otherwise go to out-of-state online casinos. However, this would require navigating regulatory challenges and addressing concerns around responsible gambling.

Indiana’s gaming industry has shown strong resilience and growth, with May 2024 marking a third consecutive month of AGR surpassing $200 million. The Terre Haute Casino has significantly contributed to this success, indicating that new entrants can effectively boost overall revenue. As Indiana considers the future of its gaming industry, the potential for legalizing online casinos presents a promising avenue for further expansion and increased state revenue. Legalization of iGaming could not only enhance the state's financial health but also position Indiana as a competitive player in the burgeoning online gaming market.
