Gaming Industry Invests $471.8 Million in Responsible Gaming

As Problem Gambling Education Month draws to a close, the American Gaming Association (AGA) has unveiled a significant study revealing that the gaming industry is investing unprecedented amounts in responsible gaming initiatives. According to the AGA, industry participants collectively spent $471.8 million on responsible gaming in 2023, reflecting a heightened commitment to ensuring safe gambling practices.

A Substantial Increase in Investment

This year’s investment represents a remarkable 72% increase over the past seven years, amounting to nearly $200 million more than the industry spent in 2017. This surge in funding coincides with the rapid growth of sports betting and online casinos, which have become increasingly popular across the United States.

The AGA's study broke down the responsible gaming investments into five categories, with customer service interactions leading the way at $135.4 million. Additional areas of focus included the development and maintenance of responsible gaming programs, which received $122.4 million, and consumer-facing education initiatives, garnering $107.7 million. Together, these three categories accounted for more than 75% of the industry’s overall investment.

Rapaport remarked, “But sports betting is not the only relatively new form of online gaming that brings gambling options to consumers’ fingertips— from the comfort of home— like never before.” The growth of iGaming has also contributed to this trend. For example, Pennsylvania online casinos saw their total revenue soar from $12.3 million in December 2019 to an astonishing $204.2 million by December 2023.
