Illegal Casinos Busted in Thailand With 54 Major Arrests

A warehouse in the Bang Yai district of Nonthaburi turned out to be more than just a storage facility. On Wednesday, a joint task force of police and district officials raided the nondescript structure, uncovering what appeared to be a fully functioning underground casino. The operation, the latest in a province-wide crackdown, led to 54 arrests and the seizure of gambling paraphernalia and more than THB218,000 (US$5,900) in cash.

Located in Soi Kaeo In, the one-rai compound had been modified for secrecy and operation. Shielded by a three-metre-high zinc fence, the premises were air-conditioned and equipped to accommodate dozens of gamblers at once. Police officers gained entry by scaling the fence, where they found several individuals actively engaged in illegal gambling activities.

Of the 54 suspects detained, 46 were Thai nationals and 8 were identified as migrants. All face pending criminal charges, with investigators reviewing surveillance footage to determine how long the operation had been running and whether others—particularly financiers or organizers—may have been involved.
