Michigan Online Revenue Hits 300 Million Record in May

Michigan’s online gambling sector reached a new milestone in May, generating a record $301.4 million in gross revenue, according to data released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). This figure represents a 15.8% increase over the previous monthly high of $260.5 million recorded in March, and a 26% year-on-year rise from May 2024.

The growth was driven by strong performances in both the iGaming and mobile sports betting segments. After deducting promotional credits and bonuses, adjusted gross receipts stood at $271.8 million—another state record—up 31.4% compared to the same month last year and 4.6% from April.

 

iGaming Revenue Crosses $250 Million

Online slots and table games accounted for the bulk of May’s gambling revenue, with iGaming gross receipts totaling $251.5 million. This marked a 26.6% year-over-year increase. Adjusted for promotions, iGaming revenue was $236.2 million, a 31.9% rise from May 2024.

Among operators, BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit regained the top spot in the iGaming market after falling to second place in April. Their partnership yielded $7.4 million in gross receipts and $63.3 million in adjusted revenue. FanDuel and MotorCity Casino, which led in April, came in second with $65.9 million gross and $61.9 million adjusted. DraftKings, in partnership with the Bay Mills Indian Community, held third place with $36.3 million gross and $34.1 million adjusted.  Commercial iGaming operators contributed $49.1 million in tax payments to the state in May. Additionally, Detroit received $12.7 million, and tribal operators paid $5.8 million to their respective governing bodies.

Michigan’s sports betting market also expanded in May, with gross receipts rising 19.3% year-on-year to $50 million. Adjusted receipts climbed even higher, up 27.7% to $35.6 million. Total handle—representing the amount wagered—was $386.1 million, a 12.3% increase from the previous May.

The average hold, or percentage of wagers retained by operators, was 12.95% across the state. FanDuel and MotorCity Casino maintained a dominant position in sports betting, collecting $22.6 million in gross receipts from $139.5 million in wagers, yielding a 16.2% hold. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community followed with $12.5 million in revenue and an 11.55% hold from $108.2 million in handle. BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit ranked third with $7.4 million in revenue and a 13.73% hold from $54.7 million in bets.

Sports betting contributed $2 million in state tax revenue, while Detroit received an additional $651,441. Separately, the MGCB reported that Detroit’s three commercial casinos—MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown—generated $114 million in total revenue in May. This represents a modest 0.4% increase over the same period in 2024.

Of the total, $112.7 million came from traditional slots and table games, with the remaining $1.3 million derived from retail sports betting. MGM Grand Detroit retained the largest market share at 47%, followed by MotorCity with 30% and Hollywood Casino with 23%. The three casinos paid $9.1 million in state gaming taxes and $13.4 million to the City of Detroit. They also contributed $48,431 in state retail sports betting taxes and $59,193 to Detroit from sports betting activities.

May’s results underscore the continued growth and maturing of Michigan’s regulated online gambling industry. With iGaming surpassing $250 million for the first time and sports betting showing strong year-over-year gains, the state remains one of the top-performing online gambling markets in the U.S. Operators and regulators alike will now look to sustain this momentum through the summer months and into the fall sports season.
