Ohio Legislators Begin Exploration of Online Casino Legalization

Sen. Nathan Manning and Rep. Jay Edwards, who co-chaired the commission, have indicated that while online gaming holds promise, the legislative journey will be gradual. Manning anticipates that the House will take the initiative, as it did with sports betting, but acknowledges that Senate approval could be more challenging. Concerns about the social impacts of expanded gaming and potential job losses at physical casinos are significant factors.

Sen. Bill DeMora, a prominent labor advocate, voiced apprehension about the impact on local casino jobs. “Until we have concrete evidence that iGaming won’t negatively affect existing employment, I’m wary,” DeMora said. “I’m open to the discussion, but we need to ensure that workers aren’t left behind.”

Adding to the complexity is Governor Mike DeWine’s known reluctance towards gambling expansion. DeWine, who has previously supported increased taxes on sports betting and expressed concerns over gambling advertisements, might prove a significant obstacle to online casino legislation.
