The term comes from the broader gambling vernacular, referring to a player who places bets on the outcomes of games. In baccarat, punters have the option to wager on three possible outcomes: the “Player” hand, the “Banker” hand, or a “Tie.” Although the game is based on chance, punters might rely on various strategies, personal preferences, or superstitions to decide where to place their money. Whether they bet on the Player or Banker hand, their decision influences the flow of the game and the odds they face. The role of the punter is crucial in baccarat, as without them, there would be no stakes or excitement.

Mechanics

The game is typically played with multiple decks of cards, usually between six and eight. Two hands are dealt, the “Player” hand and the “Banker” hand. The objective is to predict which hand will have a total value closest to 9. Players can bet on either hand, or on a Tie, where both hands have the same total. The dealer handles the cards, drawing two for each hand, and depending on the totals, a third card may be drawn for either or both hands according to specific rules.

The card values in baccarat are straightforward: cards 2 through 9 are worth their face value, while 10s, jacks, queens, and kings are worth zero, and aces are worth one. If the total of a hand exceeds 9, only the second digit is counted. For example, if a hand is dealt a 7 and a 6, the total would be 13, but only the 3 is counted, giving the hand a value of 3. After the hands are dealt, the totals are revealed, and the player or banker with the higher total wins. In case of a tie, the Tie bet wins.
