A straddle in poker is a voluntary blind bet placed before the cards are dealt, typically by the player immediately to the left of the big blind. Unlike the small and big blinds, which are forced bets, the straddle is optional and usually twice the size of the big blind. By putting in this extra bet, the straddler effectively buys the right to act last during the pre-flop betting round. This changes the usual order of play and adds more money to the pot before any cards are revealed, increasing the stakes and tension in the hand.

Using a straddle can shift the dynamics of a poker game. Because the straddler acts last pre-flop, they gain more information about how other players are betting, which can be a strategic advantage. The larger initial pot can also encourage more aggressive betting and raise the overall action level at the table. However, it can also make the game riskier since players are committing chips without seeing their cards. This combination of higher risk and potential reward makes the straddle a tool often used by players who want to control the pace or disrupt more cautious opponents.

Despite its advantages, the straddle is not always the best choice. It comes with key trade-offs that players must consider:
