The standoff (or tie) is a less common but significant event in the game. It occurs when the total value of the player’s hand matches the total value of the banker’s hand. Since the value of hands in baccarat is determined by the last digit of the total, a tie means both hands result in the same score, such as 7-7 or 9-9. This outcome is rare but not impossible. In fact, the likelihood of a standoff happening is generally about 9.5%, depending on the specific rules of the game and the number of decks used. While this percentage is low, the possibility of a tie adds an element of unpredictability to the game.

One of the most interesting aspects of a standoff in baccarat is how it affects betting strategies. Players can place a bet specifically on the tie outcome, which offers much higher odds than betting on either the player or the banker. A tie bet can pay out at odds of 8:1 or even higher in some cases. However, this comes at a cost. While the payout can be appealing, the probability of a tie occurring is much lower, meaning that the house edge on a tie bet is significantly higher compared to other bets in the game. Mechanics

In baccarat, both the player and the banker are dealt two cards each, with the possibility of a third card being drawn based on specific rules. The goal is to have a hand value as close to 9 as possible. The values of the cards are straightforward: number cards 2 through 9 are worth their face value, face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) and 10s are worth zero, and Aces are worth one. If the total value of a hand exceeds 9, only the last digit of the total counts. For example, a hand with a 7 and an 8 totals 15, but in baccarat, this is counted as 5. A standoff occurs when both the player’s and the banker’s hands total the same number.

In terms of the game’s rules, a standoff only happens after both hands have been completed. If neither the player nor the banker has a hand value of 8 or 9 (a “natural”), the game proceeds with drawing a third card under specific conditions. These rules differ slightly depending on the casino, but generally, the player draws a third card if their hand totals 5 or less, and the banker will draw based on the player’s actions. If both the player and the banker end up with the same total after all cards are dealt, a standoff occurs, resulting in a tie. The payout for this outcome is typically much higher than a win for the player or banker, but because a tie is rare, it carries a greater house edge.
