Mastercard is returning to Saudi Arabia's flagship esports event in 2025, extending its involvement with the Esports World Cup in Riyadh in a move that continues to link global finance with the fast-growing world of competitive digital entertainment.

Following last year's collaboration, Mastercard will resume its role as an official event partner for the Esports World Cup, scheduled between July 7 and August 24, 2025. The partnership reflects a broader trend of traditional financial institutions embedding themselves in cultural and digital environments that attract younger, digitally fluent audiences.

At the core of Mastercard's renewed presence is a focus on digital infrastructure, mentorship programming, and on-site interactivity. The brand will again support the Mastercard Gamer Academy, a program developed in conjunction with G2 Esports and the Esports World Cup Foundation. This initiative offers a selective mentoring pathway designed to give ten participants structured guidance from within the professional esports scene.

Beyond this, Mastercard is incorporating interactive elements into the event landscape through activities designed to engage the audience. These include reward-based digital games, onsite player appearances, and informal talks designed to explore what daily life and career paths look like for those pursuing roles in esports organizations. The intention behind these efforts is to establish a link between emerging esports audiences and Mastercard's payment technologies in a more embedded, activity-oriented setting.

While the initiative is clearly aligned with Mastercard's commercial interest in digital ecosystems, it also forms part of a wider narrative being advanced by the Esports World Cup Foundation itself. The event is no longer positioned solely as a tournament, but rather as a layered platform where sports, tech, and cultural content converge. The inclusion of live music, anime cafes, retro-themed gaming areas, and cosplay segments alongside the main competitions marks a shift toward a more comprehensive entertainment format, an approach well suited to Mastercard's goals of reaching younger demographics across multiple touchpoints.

According to Mohammed Al Nimer, Chief Commercial Officer at the Esports World Cup Foundation, the continued relationship reflects the event's evolution into a framework for combining innovation with youth-oriented programming. Mastercard's regional executive, Saud Swar, also linked the project to longer-term goals involving economic diversification and talent development.
