Curacao's gambling industry is transforming significantly as the island collaborates with the Netherlands to overhaul its regulatory framework. Curacao's National Ordinance on Gambling (LOK) is at the heart of this reform, a recently introduced law designed to restructure the island's regulatory mechanisms. A meeting in Willemstad brought together Curacao's Finance Minister Javier Silvania, Dutch Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel, and State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Zsolt Szabo. A central element of this partnership is the direct collaboration between Curacao's newly established Curacao Gaming Authority (CGA) and the Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). The KSA will guide the CGA, offering expertise in supervision and enforcement while assisting Curacao in aligning its practices with global standards.

This partnership also includes semi-annual evaluations to measure progress and identify challenges in real time. These assessments are expected to play a critical role in ensuring that reforms are enacted and maintained effectively.

Beyond regulatory upgrades, the partnership addresses financial crimes tied to the gambling industry. Institutions such as the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU Curacao), the Public Prosecution Service, and the Criminal Investigation Cooperation Team are collaborating to investigate and prosecute cases of money laundering, fraud, and other unlawful activities.

This approach seeks to enhance the credibility of Curacao's gambling sector by addressing the legal vulnerabilities that have long undermined trust in the industry.

For casino operators, these changes represent a shift toward tighter regulatory control.
